Pittsburgh Airport Service Animal Policies

Assistance animals are welcome to travel with passengers who have disabilities. Certain exemptions are provided to these animals, but some rules and restrictions still apply. To determine if your dog qualifies to be certified as a Psychiatric Service Dog and can be accepted as such for air travel, you can visit Pettable’s PSD service.

Pittsburgh Airport Pet Policies

Pittsburgh is an airport that services many of the largest flyers in the world. When flying an animal, there are generally three different ways to choose from.

In the Cabin: If your or cat is old enough, and meets the small size requirements, then he can fly in the cabin with you. Service and emotional support animals are also often allowed in the cabin as long as you make sure to book their trip and follow your airline’s requirements.

As Checked Baggage: If your pet is too large to fly in the cabin, flying as checked baggage is another viable option. Your animal will not have to go through security, just bring your pet and all of his necessary equipment to the check-in desk.

PIT Airport Pet Cargo Locations

If your pet must make the journey alone, then you can use the cargo services that many airlines provide. Don’t bring your animal into the airport, but instead to the cargo facility on campus. If you are picking up a pet from the facility, please call WorldWide Flight Services at 412-472-9090 for the most up to date instructions.

Bringing Your Pet through PIT Airport Security

If your animal will be accompanying you on the flight, you will need to have its ticket or registration with you in order to get through security. Bring your animal to the security checkpoint and follow the instructions from the TSA. When it is your turn, take your animal out of the carrier and either carry it through, or walk it on a leash. You will be directed through the metal detector. All of your carryon items will need to go through security, which includes your animal’s supplies as well.

It is always a good idea to consult with your animal’s vet before a long trip or other stressful events. Don’t drag your animal in preparation for the flight before consulting with your vet. Find even more information on the Fly Pittsburgh website.
