Newark Liberty Airport Service Animal Policies

Assistance animals are welcome to travel with passengers who have disabilities. Certain exemptions are provided to these animals, but some rules and restrictions still apply. To determine if your dog qualifies to be certified as a Psychiatric Service Dog and can be accepted as such for air travel, you can visit Pettable’s PSD service.

Newark Liberty Airport Pet Relief Areas

The Newark Airport has several available pet relief areas with plans to expand. The pre-security locations are outside of the arrivals/baggage claim area of each terminal. The outside Terminal A area is in the A Courtyard by the west side, the Terminal B area is on the south side of Immigration Hall, and the Terminal C location is in the C Courtyard. The indoor areas are close to Gate 57, Gate 65, the Delta Lounge, Gates 40-47, and Gate 131. Passengers can find more information about Newark Liberty International Airport pet policies and customer care representatives.

EWR Airport Pet Cargo Locations

If your dog is too large to fly with you in the cabin, he will likely need to travel as cargo. Some airlines allow pets to fly as checked baggage, but this practice is becoming increasingly uncommon. However, if this is the case, you can process your pup when checking into your flight and pick him up at excess baggage upon arrival.

If your pet is traveling as cargo, Newark Airport pet policy requires that individuals retrieve their pets from airline-specific cargo facilities. Newark International supports cargo shipments from Aeroterm, United Airlines, FedEx Cargo, the United Parcel Service, and additional sources. Pet parents must secure their own private transportation. There is no shuttle service to and from the cargo locations. See the Newark airport cargo facility map here.

More Newark Liberty Airport Pet Policies

According to the Newark Liberty International Airport pet policy, animals are not allowed inside passenger terminals unless in a kennel. The only exceptions exist for leashed working dogs (including service animals), when pets travel through security, and while they are utilizing a pet relief station.

Newark is a remarkably pet-friendly airport, offering both pre- and post-security animal relief area options for each terminal (excluding a Terminal 1 post-security area, which is currently being developed). This is likely the result of the airport’s status as a popular layover location. This, however, means that many of the animals using pet relief areas are under a deadline—they need to get to their next flight before it departs. Though EWR pet policy does not address this, we advise pet parents to exercise patience while in line for animal relief areas. If someone’s connecting flight leaves in just a few minutes, allow them to step in front of you.
