New Orleans Airport Service Animal Policies

Assistance animals are welcome to travel with passengers who have disabilities. Certain exemptions are provided to these animals, but some rules and restrictions still apply. To determine if your dog qualifies to be certified as a Psychiatric Service Dog and can be accepted as such for air travel, you can visit Pettable’s PSD service.

New Orleans Airport Pet Relief Areas

No need to worry about where to find a place for your pet to make a pit stop. As part of the New Orleans Airport pet policy, there are two pet relief areas located throughout the airport campus. One is located outdoors, and another one can be found inside Terminal 2, past the security checkpoint. To learn more about these pet relief areas, where they can be found, and what to expect, check out our detailed resource for New Orleans Airport pet relief areas.

MSY Airport Security and Pet Policy

All pets should be brought to the TSA in a hand-held carrier. Just before the screening process, take your pet out of the carrier so that the carrier can be scanned by the X-ray machine. You should carry your animal in your arms or walk him on a leash through the metal detectors or other security devices. Before you travel with your animal, make sure he or she can handle being in a crowded environment, and is used to the carrier they will be flying in. After security, you can put your pet back in the carrier so that you are ready to board your plane. Ask the TSA officers nearby for clarification if you are ever unsure of what to do. While in the terminal, keep your animal in its carrier. Service dogs can be kept on a leash, following the guidelines of your airline for flying.

New Orleans Airport Pet Cargo Pickup Locations

If you need to send an animal across the country, but cannot accompany that animal yourself, you may prefer to send your animal as air cargo. Most airliners will require you to bring your animal to their airport cargo facility. New Orleans Airport has a cargo facility area located on the North GA Ramp, and you can find that by taking Aberdeen Drive from Veterans Highway.

More MSY Airport Pet Policies

New Orleans is a busy airport. With so many travelers, it’s no surprise that MSY hosts many animals traveling along with their handlers. The pet policy of New Orleans seems to be pretty lax, and in fact is very welcoming of animals, going so far as to enlist therapy alligators to help bring a smile to passengers’ faces. Although New Orleans Airport does not list an official policy for animals in the airport, it does follow federal regulations for animals passing through security checkpoints and being in the terminal. At any rate, it’s best to use common sense in these busy, public spaces and keep your carryon close at hand on a leash or in its crate or carrier. As an additional advantage, this will help keep your animal calm, too.
