Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) Service Animal Policies

Assistance animals are welcome to travel with passengers who have disabilities. Certain exemptions are provided to these animals, but some rules and restrictions still apply. To determine if your dog qualifies to be certified as a Psychiatric Service Dog and can be accepted as such for air travel, you can visit Pettable’s PSD service.

Anchorage Airport Pet Relief Areas

There are two ANC pet relief areas located at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. Both options are outdoors and available in pre-security areas near both terminals. Signage is provided to help pet parents find their way to the areas, which are curbside and adjacent to the baggage claim doors.

While these pet relief areas are useful for people entering and exiting the airport, they can be very inconvenient for people with layovers or those who need relief just before a flight. The ANC pet policy requires that pet owners re-enter the airport through security, which can take a lot of time. While we suspect that Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport will implement an indoor pet relief area in the near future, current travelers should budget their time accordingly.

Anchorage Airport Pet Policy for Cargo Shipping

Flying a pet via cargo shipment can be an excellent option for owners who do not need to accompany the animal. That said, Anchorage winters can be very hard, and temperatures are known to plummet precipitously overnight. It is important to keep in mind that airlines may not offer animal cargo transportation year-round, as low temperatures can put a pet’s health at risk. All information about animals flying into and out of Alaska can be found at the state’s veterinarian page.

If you plan to fly an animal via cargo, the ANC pet policy requires pet parents to collect their animals at airline-specific cargo facilities. These are located outside of the main terminal building.

What to Expect from the Anchorage International Airport Pet Policy

Flying doesn’t have to be difficult, even when you bring your pets along for the ride. One of the biggest time savers is to get organized before your trip. Knowing where you need to be and when is half the battle. The other half is packing what you need. Grabbing a few essentials, like spare plastic waste bags, a leash, and even a collapsible water bowl can help significantly. Pack these items in an easy-to-reach place, like the top of your bag or in the pockets of your pet’s carrier. Bulkier items can go in your checked baggage.

According to the Anchorage Airport pet policy, animals are not allowed to leave their carriers while traveling through the terminals. After security, your pet should remain safe and sound inside of their carrier. The only exceptions apply to pets using animal relief areas and service dogs, who can be kept on a leash.

More About the ANC Pet Policy

The ANC pet policy regarding security does not differ from airports of a similar size. When it’s your turn to go through, place your items and your pet’s carrier on the conveyor belt, and remove your pet from his container. Then, the two of you will go through the metal detector together. After you’re finished, situate your pet back in the carrier and then you are free to proceed to your gate.
